Midwives? What do midwives have to do with this? Could the link be dodgy?

They've been at war with France for 700 of the past 1000 years ... and they've got nukes!

Charles de Gaulle understood the menace of the English. That's why he kept them out of the EC.

I'd thought he meant Ireland; I ran across an article on the BBC News site today talking about the surge in quite young people straining social services in pleasant, attractive places to live.

(There was also an article about the rate of economic growth in Africa rising for another year, a trend which, if it continues, means the continent might lose vast reserves of its poverty within a decade.)

Since 2001, the number of live births in England has increased by almost 71,000 (12.5%), and is now at a 26-year high. In 2006, 635,679 live births were recorded.

It's only been about half a century since their last attempt at global hegemony collapsed. How soon people forget.

Here's a scary thought - what if they teamed up with the Germans to make that bid? good thing they're not pals.

Oh, we got on just fine with the Germans. They like beer and fried food and global domination and football (the real version, not the cheap knockoff of rugby played in pads like big girls' blouses), so by those measures the Germans are English. Come right to it, fifteen hundred years ago, the English were Germans.

"beer and fried food and global domination and football" - that all sounds like home-if ya'll decide to have another go, can we Yanks join in if we learn to play your silly game?

I read somewhere that at one point after the Second World War, France actually contemplated becoming a Commonwealth Realm, like Canada, with the Queen and everything.

Do you mean this? I think this will eventually be seen as temporary insanity caused by stress. That, or Mollet confused himself with Philip the Good.

I think that may be it. I also read that the US considered France's restoring its own monarchy after WWII as well.

France and Britain -- in the person of Churchill, and pretty much nobody else -- were also very seriously talking about a Union in May '40, but that was stopped by the french surrender and the Vichy debacle.

I thought it was the Irish and Germans that got along so well...after all, a beer match made in heaven.

But I was with fidelioscabinet, I thought at first the Midwives were the hostile ones, and than my stunted sense of humor finally caught up with the my intellect. :)

I wondered how long it would take to bring this up in Parliament. The BBC did a big expose on it several weeks ago. I would be very interested to see an ethnic breakdown of the births. There are a lot of people over here who think that the next generation of terrorists are being bred in large numbers on British soil.

Foreign funded and directed terrorism is nothing new in the UK, the only difference is that the current lot get their cash from Saudi and Pakistan rather than the US.

If France or the US is any guide, and if you're concerned, then yes, even though TFRs among immigrant populations may be higher than the average, the TFRs of pure laine Britons would also have risen. The immigrant minorities are too small and not nearly fecund enough to significantly alter the population composition, or the population dynamics, of the country.

I thought the latest DailyMailShockFear was being overrun by fecund Poles.

Meanwhile the Telegraph is blaming everyone from the usual swarthy types, to older women (?!), to Brummies. And apparently 20% of babies are born in immigrants.
