I don't have a dreamwidth account yet, so if anyone finds this of interest they can repost it there.

Jasper Fforde wrote a book called "Shades of Grey", which depicts a society where social class is determined by one's ability to perceive colour. The lowest social class is Grey - people who cannot perceive colour at all.

Although the novel does have some comedic elements, it is actually a dark dystopian story.

(why doesn't spell check know "dystopian"?)

Thus putting them into a deep depression and increasing the likelyhood that they will take their own lives?
Sounds double plus horrifying.
