While I appreciate the discretion in not spreading gossip, I think it's worth coming right out and saying that there are apparently rumors that Requires Hate and Benjanun Sriduangkaew are the same person. I say this because of the subsequent rumors that the first rumor hurt her chances for the Campbell this year. If James disagrees I'm happy to delete this comment, but I think this is one of those back-room things that could use a light shined on it.

If by some chance the rumor is true, I think it's hilarious and also impressive, since their writing styles are quite dissimilar. But I haven't seen any evidence for it beyond the fact that two young English-speaking Thai women who're interested in speculative fiction is apparently impossible to imagine.

I doubt it hurt her chances at the Campbell. She was always a longshot, because all the others had novels and she's only published short fiction so far.

That said, spreading this rumor is hateful and hurtful, and I'm seriously unhappy about it.

Not to mention their personalities. That must be one heck of an acting job, on top of short story after short story in a completely different style from RH's.

Exactly.

Also, hasn't Requires Hate said that she is a Thai national of Chinese descent? I would have thought she'd have a Chinese name, though I could well just be showing my ignorance.

I thought Requires Hate and Sarah Hoyt were the same person. The meter is the same, and then there's the H and T giveaway ...

How are you pronouncing 'Requires' and 'Sarah' to get the same meter?

Oh, and one of the people who appears to be identifying ROTYH as Benjanun Sriduangkaew is James May (the exact slam is "who uses the pseudonym of 'acrackedmoon,' but who I like to call 'Ben'"). This James May: http://james-nicoll.livejournal.com/4755188.html?thread=88305396

Another more direct hit is by "Fail Burton" ( http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=6102&cpage=1#comment-1039065 ) -- who is, apparently, James May: https://twitter.com/ann_somerville/status/474688273852289024

On winterfox's statement that she's of Chinese heritage, much here.

I forgot about her being abusive to Cindy Pon.

That is the strangest idea! Why would anyone think that those two were the same person?

I think talking about the rumor is important, just to show how nonsensical it is. Really? If someone is capable of creating and sustaining two entirely different literary personae and voices in their second or third language...well, I'd be impressed as well as hornswoggled.

I'm also pretty sure that Requires was doxxed during her days as scourge-of-the-fan-fiction-community winterfox.

Because they all look alike.

Acrackedmoon used to post frequently in the Ferretbrain Playpen...having interacted with her there regularly, I just don't see it.

I went back and skimmed Requires Only That You Hate, and seriously, it would require a personality schism.

I'm sure you're right about the Campbell. I wasn't expecting her to win, but I was surprised at just how few votes she got. But then she was one of my two favorites on the list.

They're probably both actually Somtow Sucharitkul. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

Oh good, maybe a sequel to Mallworld!
