Canada's space agency spirals towards Code Red
james_nicoll
Over the past year, the Canadian Space Agency has been battered by government budget cuts, buffeted by a critical review, and now even its president is ejecting right out of the place.

This week, the federal agency announced former Canadian astronaut Steve MacLean is suddenly leaving the helm at the end of this month to pursue a new career in quantum physics.

Damn you, quantum physics!

Wondering if this isn't what's drawn MacLean's attention to the field:

Presumably he is also not leaving to pursue a career in quantum physics.

Unless the space program is going to advance the exploitation of the oil sands or creationism, is there really any point to it?

Pointedly ignoring rhetorical sarcasm in service of our shared cause for a second:

Plenty of points to it for those of us not in the oil industry or certain sectors of Organized Religion to defend and support.

I agree with you and disagree with the policies of our soul dead overlords.

Well, we are talking about the government that is selling the Experimental Lakes Research Area for a dollar, after putting several millions into upgrading it.

Clearly they don't need research in the effects of water pollution in the tarsands, which is motivation enough. And the fiscal responsibility is everything we'd expect from neocons.

Tempted to go looking for a copy of that "MacLean Report" discussed in Weston's opinion piece now.
