Hm. When I say it slowly it's more SSSSTrrrrrreeeeeyyynnnngthhhh. A smooth transition of my mouth, pretty much, with the mouth opening peaking at the "ey" and diminishing from there. There's a lot going on INSIDE the mouth, but the way I was taught to recognize syllables was by mouth opening peaks, e.g., your chin moving down.
Compared to the prior example, "fire", in which the long version is FFFfffffiiiiii-yyyeeerrrrr, with the mouth opening peaking TWICE, once at the "iiii" and once at "eeer".
