I had a housemate, back in Massachusetts, who had worked a changing shift schedule for so many years that as far as we could tell, he didn't have a sleep cycle. He seemed to like it -- he did sleep, he even needed to sleep, though not necessarily at sane intervals.
I've been in that state for a couple years now, helped along by "if I sleep more than four hours at a time there will be cramps involved at the end" and "it takes half an hour to an hour to find a position that sleep can be attained from". If I know in advance when I need to be at work / at rehearsal / etc., I can be awake for it; otherwise, when I'm sleeping to-day has no real relation to when I slept yesterday.
That happens to me every time I go to see He Who Plagues. He is completely resistant to compromising on bedtimes. It takes me about a week to get back on schedule once I get home.
