I don't know what to make of this
Jann Arden's voice in her cover of Son of a Preacher Man sounds like Dolly Parton's.

I don't know who Jann Arden is, so why does it surprise you? She's Canadian and doesn't have the accent?

She's a fairly well-known singer up here. It's not just the accent. Her voice isn't anything like Parton's. Except I guess when it is.

Her songs tend to be sad and bittersweet or sad and angry but she's pretty funny in person (I saw her when she was in town a few years ago, when Bob Kemmis opened for her [1]). Her version of Jann Arden singing a Leonard Cohen song really has to be heard in person...

I see wikipedia has the Juno Awards thing:

the 2006 Juno Awards, to counter host Pamela Anderson's on-stage anti-seal hunting rant, Arden generated cheers when she jokingly told the audience that her bra was "made entirely of seal eyelids".

1: I knew I was going to pick up his CD during his first song, Freak Luck when he got to this line:

“Freak luck put a car in the way / I wasn’t looking for love but our eyes met/ As I bounced off your Chevrolet”.

His second song began "Well, I'm scarred [...]".

I also sometimes play his Stop Sucking as background music for certain books.

Stop sucking, stop sucking, I gave forty dollars to a scalper and you're sucking, I can't believe you'd be such a let down.

LOL Okay, I can see why you'd like Kemmis! But do you really mean "Her version of Jann Arden singing..."?

She was making fun of her own stuff. It was like Eeyore Sings Sylvia Plath.

Yeah, that's the thing about her -- her songs tend to be moody-ish, kind of sad, but every time I hear her interviewed or see her on TV she is hilarious. I quite like her cover album but didn't see the Dolly Parton thing...maybe that's only obvious if you listen to more Dolly Parton?
