Data, please
Is there a convenient online source for total number of books sold by year in North America, one that lists how many individual volumes were sold?

Is this any use?

I suppose you could also trudge your way through lists like this:

... doing indicidual title searches (oy!)

I can give you a single datapoint - "About 1.62 billion books were purchased in the United States in 2001, according to Barrie Rappaport at IPSOS-NPD", mentioned in this study. This represents two to four million titles, or an average of a few hundred copies each.

I'd guess either Bowker or Nielsen Bookscan might have this for the US, though Bookscan would only supply data from subscribers. For Canada you'd probably want BookNet Canada.

Which I suppose is a longwinded way of saying "No, but I know who might have the data."
