I'm doing it wrong
I appear to have accidentally grated the tip of one finger while cleaning the grater last night.

At least it is better to grate oneself after cooking than before, I guess.

I was at a gathering for people from my high school and when one of them finally got a good look at me she marveled out loud at the number of scars she could see. I don't think there are all that many but she did.

I will admit there's a chunk missing from my forehead that I can't account for. You would think a divot that size would be memorable but it isn't.

If the divot is in your forehead, I think it is understandable that you would not remember how it got there, or the preceding few minutes, for that matter.

If you grate it during preparation, you get added protein in your meal...

So the blood all over the place did not irritate you at all ?

It is not a huge gouge. I guess there wasn't enough blood to be obvious in the wash water.

This was the annoying side that has no grain, just pointy holes.

It was also the side the owner of the grater never uses because it is pesky to clean.

Have you tried using a hard bristle tooth brush for grater cleaning? My grater cleaner tool of choice these days, and a yet another good use for old tooth brushes.

If you were using a box grater for cheese, you might think about picking up a microplane grater. Comes in about three types, for different sizes of grated stuff. Does a nice job and it's harder to randomly mash a hand into it.

The Zyliss whirly graters are good for small amounts, too!

I use two of the microplane graters. Don't help much with my fun when doing fresh ginger or onion. More's the pity.

Oh, I know all about doing that on the cheese grater, but I do this when I'm grating onion or fresh ginger for an oriental salad chicken dish that I really like.

However, for me, the ultimate self-mutilation comes when I cut parts of my fingers when chopping up red peppers. Never any other kind of peppers, just the red ones. Sometimes, can't tell the blood for the pepper juice. :)

I think it's time for an "Operation"-style scar map with pointers. Unless that's already up on your Wikipedia page. :) (No, I am not checking now.)

But do preserve as much of your skull as possible. That's where a lot of the good stuff is.

I did that last year. The fingerprint scanner on my laptop wasn't happy about recognizing my fingers afterwards. Alas.

Ah, the FBI told me they could still match my fingerprints now that my hands are all wrinkly, like they're just out of the tub. They must be better than your laptop!

I bought the one sided large grater for that purpose. I never used the strange pointy side of the old box grater. I think that was popular during my grandmother's day.

Most people get food processor's or servants if they need something that finely minced. Being a peasant (or at least urban poor) at birth may explain why I learned to not be so fussy about the consistency of the food I ate.
