Speaking as a member of the patriarchy
If you compare a female candidate whose determination you feel is now self-destructive to Glenn Close's psychotic stalker in Fatal Attraction, people are going to assume you're a sexist pig. I'm not sure what would happen if you compared a male candidate to Glenn Close's psychotic stalker in Fatal Attraction because for some reason I've never seen it happen.

May I suggest that Napoleon in Russia would work just as well? Or possibly the Recording Industry Association of America reaction to Napster?

I believe there are more recent examples of self-destructive determination which are (not entirely by coincidence) specific to American politics.

Is the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail sufficiently well known to serve?

The very premise of Boxing Helena was so disgusting I've never been able to bring myself to watch it.

Then you can't understand the real horror of Boxing Helena, which is the unthinkably, agonizingly long soft-focus sex scene, while Enigma plays and Helena watches through the gap of an ajar door. No, it gets worse: I have a soft spot for Julian Sands for some reason, but, at least for the camera, he is incapable of manufacturing the tiniest iota of sexual chemistry with a woman. Even without the added creep factor of his character knowing his mutilated captive is watching, it would be a death march set to new age music.

It's actually very welcoming of them to take Clinton to heart, and I'm not being facetious. She's not one of them, and they know it; they're not stupid.

With regard to Ms Close and any resemblance to said female candidate - I can only hope the Democratic Party isn't the bunny.

Wouldn't the Party be Douglas' character? The bunny would be something cute and inoffensive that Party might be fond of, like, hrm, Guam.

I think I'd supposed the country to be equivalent to the Douglas character. Guam? Let's protect Guam, shall we? Heh.

I suppose it would be possible to compare the male candidate to some male stalker from a suspense movie. But offhand, I can't think of any from suspense movies, just from bad romantic movies.

I'm not sure if this says more about Hollywood, or my mind this morning.

There's the Ron Silver character in Blue Steel. The scene where he's all naked and crazy could be a metaphor for some kind of political indiscretion.

Just for giggles, try googling "Hillary Clinton" and "Fatal Attraction". The trick is to find a pundit who hasn't compared her to Close's character.

It is such a catchy comparison it would be hard to ignore after it had been made the first time. Is it me or is she starting to look edgier and edgier in every new newsclip? Is she really getting edgier or is the media starting to target those moments to reflect the new perception of Hillary.

Some of what looks like "edgy" may in fact be stress and fatigue. Both presidential candidates have been working a grueling travel and speaking schedule for weeks now, and even the much-younger Obama is looking a bit ragged around the edges.

Sexist? Yes, but that's what one gets when one has a venal press, lazy, cowardly politicians and ad hominem campaigning that doesn't address the issues.

Personally, I wouldn't trust any of the potential candidates in the US presidential elections to run a whelk stall, let alone govern a country. My betting though is that McCain will win, and will get to play Olivares.
